You should have a professional do it. If you don't know what you are doing, it won't look nice at all. Taking about 2" off won't make too much of a difference. They will still look like boot fit. You will need to take more than two inches off. Good luck!

No i don't think that it will mess up the jeans, but after a while though you will see the crease is permanent and you won't be able to wear them uncuffed.
